Topics with unread posts are sometimes not highlighted in the Recent Forum Posts list
Author: ulrichmerkel@web.de (ulrich-merkel)
as from today, it looks like posts from Daniel or Barbara do not show the posts in BOLD on the main page. It's a bit strange beeing not informed about the new information, isn't it? added 20151111: even giannis latest post on "[SOLVED] filedump /nobom" was not indicated in BOLD

you can always go into the topics and from there you can see what has been updated through the unread posts setting.

I (still) see several bold (not read) 'recent forum posts' on the homepage when I log in. The amount matches the ones I have not read (since yesterday). I have to admit that I have found the highlighting of the 'recent blog posts' not all that reliable; sometimes an older (already read) blog post pops up in bold again, when I'm sure I have read it already. To this I must say that I regularly clean out my browser cookies, don't know if that matters.

I think that's normal. It just indicates that a new comment has been added to the "highlighted" blog post.

Ah, thanks, that wil probably explain it. I didn't think of the possibility of comments being added to a blog post

I've tried replying to various topics and they all appeared correctly as bold on the frontpage. Your situation was different, and could be caused by many factors, e.g.: changing time(zones), clearing cookies, keeping topics open in other tabs/browsers/devices or not being logged in. Furthermore, there's a checkbox at the top of the "Recent Forum Posts" area that marks all posts as read. This link adds "?mark-forum" to the URL. Please make sure you're not accidentally refreshing this link. Lastly, if it happens again, please tell me the exact date and time you last visited the forum and frontpage so I might be able to debug your situation.

I haven't done any of the things you mentioned. For me it seems to occur with role "Admin" posters and/or [SOLVED]... topics. BTW: the "topics with unread posts" already does not show posts from "richiet"

Hi Admin, Today, I have the following situation: on the startpage, no posts are highlighted. but if I read a post in the forum, I got informed on righthand top that there are 2 unread posts: both the [solved] topics. Perhaps it's worth to have a look.

Hi Ulrich, It sounds like this is a problem with your specific user account. Please log out in all browsers across all devices and log in again in your primary browser only. (Actually logging out and in is important) I've created a quick test page for you right here that shows the same Recent Forum Posts widget but with more details. It shows:
If a new forum topic or reply appears, please let me know these four corresponding values.

just found your hidden "here" link. A grey link is hard to find in a black text. Your special page says that there are 0 new on filedump and background too bright, but they still appear (correctly) under "2 topics with unread post". Looks like there are different filters applied because "richiet" is treated similar.

I totally agree with you, why not use a blue color for links, as seems to be a sort of standard on the web. ( By the way, congrats on having your own forum test page now
)

This is expected behaviour. A post is only considered "new" on the frontpage if it is posted after your last visit of the forum. Hence the title "Recent Forum Posts". The "2 topics with unread post" section is meant to find actual unread posts.
That makes sense. Links in forum posts are now blue, visited links purple.
Too bad it will only be temporary

so the "new" logic is: some posts are marked on the frontpage, but as soon as I enter "Community" -> "Forum" (even just open the page) ALL these markers on the frontpage are reset?

It's more like the following timeline:
This is because step 4 is seen as a new session. Therefore the post made in step 1 is not considered "new" anymore. Hopefully this clears it up.

The behaviour is very different from the way the "new" flags are handled in other forums, but with the logic you have stated here, it looks like I have no choice but read the "new" ones immediately to get all infos. Thanks for documenting the way this issue is handled in this forum.
