IDE Uniface9.3.02 slow in Windows7

Author: gerd.vassen@gmx.net (gerdvassen)

hi !

I want to use the IDE in Windows7 Uniface9.3, fresh install.  The IDE is very slow when editing triggers (one character after the other is displayed with a delay of 0.5 sec between each)... impossible to work with.  No problem with the same installation on Windows XP.
Did anybody encounter the same problem ?  I found no patch for this, did I miss somehting ?

thanx in advance !

  1. Hi Gerd,

The UDE of Uniface 9 is not yet supported on Windows 7 - the verification will be done with Uniface 9.4, which will be released somewhere in April -, but we (so far) have not seen any performance problems during our (quite basic) initial testing.

And I just installed Uniface 9.3.02 (plus P206) on my PC (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz with 4 GB RAM) with 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate, using a 64-bit SQL Server 2008 as repository database. My first impression is that the UDE runs at "normal" speed - it's responsive and editing triggers does not show any visible delays.

We however received also a report from the US that the UDE is slow on Windows 7 when Outlook 2007 is running at the same time as Uniface (version 9.3.01 + O103). But I also tested this and I cannot see any performance difference between running the UDE with Outlook 2007 open or not.

This is however something we obviously have to investigate further, but at this moment I apparently do not have all the information required to replicate this issue here. Maybe you could provide us some more details about your configuration?

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Daniel

  2. hello Daniel

thank you for the reply.  I am using Windos7 ultimate, I installed on 2 different laptops with the same result.  I work with Uniface 9.3.02 and I also tried the latest 9.4c1 (again on the 2 laptops, same result for both).  No outlook is running.  The UDE is slow only in the trigger editor field.  In this field there is for example the color changing of Uniface keywoards once the word is regognized, so I think the problem arises somewhere in this routine.  If I type 10 characters it takes 5 seconds for them to display (every 0.5 sec a new character is appearing).

    config:

    64bits Windows 7 Ultimate

    - Intel Core2 Duo T7250, 2GHz  2GB RAM

    - Intel Core2 Duo T7200, 2GHz  2GB RAM

    best regards,

  3. Hello Gerd,

I did a couple of additional tests and it seems that the described performance issue with the Proc Box only occurs when using an unpatched version of Uniface 9.3.02 (or version 9.3.01 unpatched and with any patch released for that particular minor release). When I however install the patch P201 (or higher) on top of Uniface 9.3.02 then the problem disappears! And I also cannot replicate the issue with the latest build of Uniface 9.4.01, which means that the GA release of that particular Uniface version will also not have this problem anymore!

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Daniel

  4. hello Daniel

great, installing the patch solved the issue. Should have tried this before, next time I encounter any problem, I will first install the available patches.

    thank you!

  5. Hello,

I have the same problem in Uniface 9.2.03 with patch 0304 applied.

Now the easy answer is for us to upgrade to 9.3.02 with patch P201 applied.  Unfortunately this isn't a particularly easy option as it will require recompiling of the entire application, full regression testing, etc., etc.

Do you know if the fix that has worked for 9.3.02 onwards will also be applied to older versions of 9?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated, otherwise we'll have to keep developers on XP until we can schedule in the upgrade !!

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  6. Hello Kevin,

I did in the meantime a couple tests with version 9.2 on Windows 7 and I think the problem is caused by the issue known as bug 28133 "Spanish characters corrupted in IDF". I'll ask that the fix for this particular is back ported to Uniface 9.2 and with a bit of luck it'll make it into the patch O310, which currently is scheduled for February 26.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Daniel
